Patient Participation Group

A Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a group of patients, carers and practice staff who meet to discuss practice issues and patient experience to help improve the service. The role of the PPG includes: being a critical friend to the practice, advising the practice on the patient perspective and providing insight into the responsiveness and quality of services, encouraging patients to take greater responsibility for their own and their family’s health, carrying out research into the views of those who use the practice, organising health promotion events and improving health literacy and regular communication with the patient population.

A successful Dementia Friends Information Session

Newport Medical Group, as part of Urban Health PCN, organised its first PCN-wide and local public services Dementia Friends Information Session.

It was very successful with attendance from primary care teams, neighbourhood offices, local voluntary organisations, pharmacists, district nurses, dentists and opticians. It was an effective way of hitting our PCCF 80% target and also raising awareness within our locality so many more than just the primary care team benefitted. It was very easy to organize by asking Alzheimer’s Society for a Dementia Champion to deliver the training, putting on a light lunch and having a venue which was able to accommodate the attendees. We distributed flyers for the event and waited for emails with numbers of places to be reserved. It really was that simple! We had to limit numbers to 50 due to the size of our venue. The event lasted just over an hour and there was an opportunity to showcase some of the local services such as DISC, Age Concern and Alzheimer's Society.

Feedback comments included ‘the entire session was extremely enlightening and well organized’ ‘made me aware of the signs and symptoms of dementia… the book case analogy was very useful’ ‘I will go back and recommend this session to my organization’ If we can do it, everyone else can too!
